Liu: Exploring Listening Effort in Primary School Classrooms

In primary schools, various activities can be conducted during classes. To improve the quality of communication, it was aimed to understand children’s listening effort during different types of activities. In this thesis, the measurements were conducted in first and fourth grade in primary schools. Listening effort was assessed subjectively by the children in the means of answering questionnaires. The questionnaires were based on different indicators related to listening effort, and they were answered by the children according to different activities. In addition, background noise was recorded during different class activities so that the acoustic parameters of the background noise in different activities could be obtained. Finally, all the obtained data was analyzed to investigate whether there is a relationship between the scores from the questionnaires, acoustic parameters, activity types, and children’s grades.
