2024 was another exciting year for research data management (RDM). At RWTH Aachen University and beyond, numerous events, new initiatives and exciting developments have further advanced RDM. It was a year full of innovations, challenges and inspiring encounters. Let’s take a look at the highlights of the past year!
Love Data Week 2024
From February 12 to 16, 2024, it was all about Love Data Week. During this week, the topics surrounding the importance of research data and its responsible use were discussed intensively. Researchers from all disciplines came together to expand their knowledge and share best practices in the field of data management.
A particular highlight was the presentation “FAIR Data Is My Kind of Data – Coscine Introduces Itself!” on February 16, 2024, which introduced the RDM platform Coscine and how it supports researchers in managing their data according to the FAIR principles. The presentation not only gave a comprehensive insight into the existing functions of Coscine, but also offered exciting prospects for future developments of the platform.
RDM Toolbox 2024
The RDM Toolbox 2024, which took place from March 18 to 20 at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University, brought together practitioners and experts from all over the world. In a practice-oriented atmosphere, the participants were able to dive deep into the challenges of RDM and develop solutions that optimize data organization and availability. The interactive exchange ensured a lively discussion and strengthened the network of the RDM community.
Coscine Survey
A user survey on Coscine was conducted for the first time at the end of April. The survey gave Coscine users the opportunity to give their feedback on the platform and share their satisfaction with the Coscine team regarding reliability, performance, documentation, support and much more. The results of the survey were very valuable and most of the feedback has already been implemented.
Advanced User Group Meeting of Coscine.nrw
The first advanced user group meeting of Coscine.nrw also took place in April. In addition to information about the user group and current developments at Coscine, participants were able to share their experiences with Coscine in an interactive group session and also elect the advisory board. The meeting was a complete success thanks to the active participation and valuable input of the participants. Planning for another user meeting in 2025 is already in full swing. More information about the meeting will soon be available on the Coscine website.
New RDM Guideline at RWTH Aachen University
A real milestone was the introduction of the new RDM guideline at RWTH Aachen University on June 18, 2024. This guideline provides clear guidelines for the management and handling of research data and contributes to the establishment of a sustainable data culture. Researchers now have clear guidelines on how to manage their data efficiently and secure it in the long term – an important step towards better data quality and use.
RWTH Young Academics Day 2024
On September 5, 2024, young academics met at the RWTH Young Academics Day. The event provided a valuable platform for young researchers to get to know RWTH’s services better and discuss the challenges of handling research data. In dialog with the experts from the RDM team, the participants gained valuable insights and practical tips and were able to put their RDM knowledge to the test in a Coscine crossword puzzle and an RDM quiz.
Data Stewardship Goes Germany 2024
Home game for Aachen! This year’s Data Stewardship goes Germany (DSgG) workshop took place at RWTH Aachen University from September 11 to 12, 2024 and highlighted the increasingly important role of data stewards in the research environment. In total, over 70 participants from all over Germany took part in the event. Best practices from the field and discussions about the latest trends and technologies made this event an important source of inspiration for the German research landscape. Next year, the TU9 workshop will take place at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
Research Data Day 2024
On November 12, 2024, the Research Data Day (RDD) took place for the fourth time in NRW and was, as always, an absolute highlight in the field of RDM. Under the motto “Into the data garden”, experts and researchers from NRW met to discuss the latest developments in research data management. Once again this year, Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZK) and RWTH Aachen University cooperated and organized a joint afternoon program in Jülich. The day was filled with exciting presentations and lively discussions at various themed tables, which led to many new ideas on how research data can be used even more efficiently and secured in the long term.
Trademark Registration Coscine
The time had finally come at the end of November. The long-awaited registration of Coscine as a word mark in Germany and the EU was completed. The registration of Coscine as a word mark not only strengthens the identity of the platform, but also protects its quality and sustainability in the long term. We are delighted about this milestone and look forward to further successes that Coscine will achieve together with the community.
