The 9th Moodle Community Meeting

On May 7, nearly 100 participants from North Rhine-Westphalia and other regions gathered virtually for the Moodle Community Meeting to discuss topics related to Moodle. Twice a year, the Moodle.NRW Competence Center hosts a community meeting. Not only are interested parties from North Rhine-Westphalia welcome, but also anyone else from German-speaking countries who works with Moodle. Moodle.NRW is part of the Network Moodle at Universities e. V. RWTH is a member of the association and participates in various projects related to Moodle.

New RWTHapp Feature: Your Battery Data for Research

The Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems (ISEA) led by Professor Dirk Uwe Sauer is investigating, among other things, the question: How long does a smartphone battery last in real-world university life, and how does it age in the process?

In collaboration with the RWTHapp, you can now share battery data from your Android device and help the department better understand batteries and make them last longer.

Freshers’ Fair 2026

As part of RWTH Aachen University’s Welcome Week, the IT Center was represented at the Freshers’ Fair in the foyer of the Audimax on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Between 1 and 4pm, numerous international students took the opportunity to learn about key services and receive immediate assistance.

It’s spring 2026 – what’s missing at the RWTH IT Center? The CLAIX-2025 HPC system isn’t yet in production! As part of the proven 1-cluster concept, CLAIX-2025 is intended to complement the existing CLAIX-2023 system at the Tier-2 level. We spoke with our HPC experts at the IT Center to find out why the commissioning has been delayed and what the current status is. Central IT provision only works with good communication and by exchanging information with local IT managers at the institutions – and this is exactly what the RWTH Admin Round Table is for. For over 14 years, it has provided a platform for administrators and IT enthusiasts to exchange information on current university-related IT topics throughout RWTH. The round table is organised by a dedicated team of five from various institutions and the IT Center.

History & Function of the DNS

The Domain Name System (DNS) makes the Internet usable by translating readable names such as rwth-aachen.de into IP addresses. It originated from simple lists of names and developed into a globally distributed, hierarchical system. Today, it fulfils many more tasks – for example in the areas of e-mail, IT security and network management. The DNS also plays a central role at RWTH Aachen University and is protected by modern technologies such as DNS firewalls. This article provides an overview of the origin, structure and current significance of the DNS.
