Great news: The DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft) funds the new research unit “Bilingual Flexibility – The Psychology of Language Control”! Bilingual flexibility describes a bilingual’s ability to flexibly select the correct language as required by a specific situation. The goal of this research unit is to enhance our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying bilingual flexibility.
The research unit consists of seven separate research projects, all led by researchers affiliated with RWTH Aachen University: Prof. Dr. Anna K. Kuhlen, Prof. Dr. Iring Koch, Prof. Dr. Thomas Günther, Prof. Dr. Stefan Heim, Prof. Dr. Andreas B. Neubauer, Dr. Andrea M. Philipp, Dr. Tanja C. Roembke, and Prof. Dr. Sabine J. Schlittmeier. The projects tackle different aspects of bilingual flexibility with a broad range of cognitive, neuroscientific and developmental approaches. The projects will be completed in collaboration with leading international researchers on bilingualism: Prof. Dr. Angela de Bruin (University of York), Prof. Dr. Mathieu Declerck (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and Prof. Dr. Zofia Wodniecka (Jagiellonian University).
We congratulate Prof. Dr. Anna Kuhlen, the spokesperson of the research unit, and Prof. Dr. Iring Koch, the deputy spokesperson, for leading the research team to this success and are excited for the work that they will complete in the next four years in Aachen!
